Studies on Taurine Efflux from the Rat Cerebral Cortex During Exposure to Hyposmotic, High K+ and OuabainContaining aCSF

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 526))

Abstract

Cerebral ischemia leads to an accumulation in the extracellular space of several amino acids including the excitatory compounds, glutamate and aspartate, and inhibitory agents, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glycine and taurine. There has been considerable interest in gaining an understanding of the mechanisms involved in ischemia-evoked release of these agents and the role that they may play in eliciting or protecting against ischemic-injuries.
