Abstract
Summarising the experience of epidemiological surveillance in Latin America and the Caribbean in a brief chapter is not an easy task, given the diversity of countries that make up the region, the scarcity of literature addressing how surveillance systems operate, and the unknown effectiveness or impact of surveillance on controlling or eradicating risks and harmful factors under surveillance. Despite the challenge of discussing this topic, it is necessary to undertake it because of the growing importance of and need for surveillance in Latin America.
