Abstract

Vision is an energy demanding process. Changes in metabolic levels can affect how we see. The earliest evidence for the metabolic modulation of human vision dates back to the pioneering days of aviation when pilots reported darkened visual fields while flying at high altitudes without oxygen masks (McFarland and Evans,1939). Studies at sea level showed that lowering the partial pressure of oxygen decreased visual sensitivity (McFarland and Forbes, 1940) and ingesting glucose reversed the effects of hypoxia (McFarland et al, 1945). Lowering blood glucose under normal oxygen conditions can decrease sensitivity (McCrimmon et al, 1998).
