Abstract

The increasing demand for mobile access has mandated enhancement to IP. Without further enhancement in the future, mobile access to the Internet would be extremely limited and this would restrict the types of services and applications available from a mobile terminal. For better integration with the fixed IP network, further improvement in roaming capabilities is necessary. According to an Ovum’s report (Mobile IP by Ian Stevenson and Ted Pugh, February 2000), though significant advances have been made to the next generation network, interoperation barriers between fixed EP and cellular IP networks are still major obstacles for mobile IP services. Until inter-operator IP roaming is commercially available, mobile IP will be far short of reaching its potential deployment in the fixed network.
