Abstract
This chapter will take as its primary mission the description of laminae I-VI (Fig. 5.1), first presented by Rexed (1952; 1954), who related this organizational pattern to earlier work. To reduce the size of this chapter, we will focus on primary afferent input and only briefly treat the equally important descending input and consider only mammalian studies.
