MTBE Occurrence in Surface and Ground Water

  • Chapter
MTBE Remediation Handbook

Abstract

This chapter summarizes the occurrence of MTBE in surface and ground water as reported in several studies. Information reviewed includes the last ten years of sampling results for the United States Geological Survey’s (USGS) National Water Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program and the findings of other MTBE sampling programs in the U.S. In addition, this chapter describes a study of MTBE occurrence performed by the Environment Agency of England and Wales; this provides a valuable counterpoint to the situation in the U.S. Most of the studies consider only MTBE occurrence. The end of the chapter summarizes additional studies comparing MTBE and benzene plume lengths performed in Texas, Florida, California, and South Carolina.
