Data Management in Environmental Information Systems

  • Chapter
Handbook of Massive Data Sets

Part of the book series: Massive Computing ((MACO,volume 4))

Abstract

This chapter describes the design and implementation of information systems to support decision-making in environmental management and protection. We employ a three-way object model: An environmental object (such as a lake) is described by one or more environmental data objects. Each environmental data object may in turn be described by some environmental metadata. The related data flow is structured into four phases. DATA CAPTURE concerns the collection and processing of environmental raw data, such as aerial photographs and measurement series. DATA STORAGE raises questions of suitable database designs and appropriate physical storage structures for the resulting massive amounts of data. DATA ANALYSIS techniques serve to prepare the available data for decision support purposes. METADATA is collected and aggregated throughout this data flow and serves to support search and browsing operations.
