Abstract
A project refers to a temporary effort with established goals that need to be achieved. They differ from operations which are the routine, ongoing and repetitive business processes in the laboratory. There are usually several informatics projects ongoing or planned in a pathology laboratory. These may directly or indirectly impact cytopathology, given that informatics plays a pivotal role in all areas of the lab. Therefore, it is important that cytologists are aware of the information technology (IT) life cycle and some broad issues related to project management in informatics.
