Abstract
Slum settlements in many parts of the world continue to experience unprecedented growth in population size. An approximated 61.7 % of Sub-Saharan Africa’s urban population was projected to be residing in slums in 2012 (UN-Habitat 2013). This trend will undoubtedly have tremendous effects on health issues that affect people living in slums or informal settlements. Generally, slums are characterized by social and economic factors that range from overcrowding, extreme levels of poverty, to crime and violence. The lack of water, sanitary, and waste disposal services also pose environmental hazards for slum inhabitants. Resultantly, waterborne and respiratory diseases are common and rates of HIV/AIDS prevalence high.
Young people in Kenya, as in other developing countries, have been significantly affected by the growth of slums. This chapter focuses on the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA), an organization located in one of Kenya’s largest slums.
