Abstract
The goal of this chapter is to convey a conceptual and pictorial understanding of the workings of quantum mechanics (QM). We introduce the experimental results that motivate QM, turning them into a reliable, quantitative model that will underpin all of our future developments. This chapter is conceptually the most difficult, but it is essential.
