Abstract
Beyond describing the spacetime around a black hole, general relativity provides a framework for studying the universe as a whole. Some of the great discoveries in cosmology during the twentieth century related to the expansion of the universe. In this chapter we study cosmic expansion in the context of relativistic cosmology. Later, in Chap. 20, we will examine how particles and gas behaved within the expanding universe shortly after the Big Bang.

The fluctuations we see in the cosmic microwave background were created by sound waves, or acoustic oscillations, in the gas in the young universe. Those fluctuations left subtle imprints in the structure of normal (“baryonic”) matter that are known as “baryon acoustic oscillations.” BAO can be measured using the distribution of galaxies [18, 19].
