Abstract
Each donor brings along a unique and compelling story. The donation of the organ is one beautiful gift; the story that brought the donor to this point is yet another gift. This story touches the lives of the living donor advocate (LDA) and the transplant team. The LDA has the blessing of hearing and holding on to those stories. The other aspect of this storytelling is to ask the questions of the donor that will unpack and unlock some of the meaning and reasoning as to why they feel compelled, or why they are questioning their decision to donate. These stories open the door to understanding both the LDA and the donor; we understand better, the relationships and the struggles of the donor and sometimes the recipient. This chapter shares with you stories of related, nonrelated, and altruistic donors and donors who wanted to donate, but could not for either psychosocial or medical reasons. There is also an analysis of each of the stories.
