Abstract
Biliary disorders may affect the biliary tree at any site, from the smallest intrahepatic interlobular bile ducts to the ampulla of Vater. Disorders affecting the small intrahepatic bile ducts may be visualised directly on liver biopsy samples. If the pathology affects large intrahepatic or extrahepatic bile ducts, a liver biopsy sample may display only the indirect signs of the disease, the full histologic manifestation of which can be appreciated only on surgical specimens or at postmortem examination.
