Laparoscopic Complications

Abstract

Although studies report fewer complications after laparoscopic colectomy, surgeons need to be aware of both common and unique complications that are associated with laparoscopy. In order to prevent laparoscopy-related complications, you need to have a consistent and systematic approach. Optimal exposure and clear understanding of laparoscopic anatomy are prerequisite to a successful laparoscopic surgery. In re-operative laparoscopic surgery, early proactive conversion is likely to result in favorable outcome. In contrast, reactive conversion created late in the operation in response to intraoperative complications will likely lead to a poor outcome and needs to be avoided.
