Complexities in Colorectal Surgery

Abstract

While pain in the anal area may be a source of embarrassment and anguish for many patients, in actuality it is a very common disorder. As the discomfort is difficult for most individuals to pinpoint as well as visualize, it is often initially ignored. Several underlying conditions may lead to anal pain, most of which are generally readily diagnosed by the practitioner on physical examination. More importantly, they can often be easily treated and cured. If left undiagnosed or untreated, the underlying source and resultant pain can become chronic and difficult to manage. In this chapter, we will discuss our approach to the patient with both acute and chronic anal pain.
