Anal Fistula

Abstract

Sphincter sparing techniques to treat fistula in ano have resulted in variable success rates. A novel technique for treating fistula in ano, the ligation of intersphincteric fistula tract (LIFT), has added another option to the surgical armamentarium for fistula treatment. The LIFT is not only successful in healing fistulas but also has the ability to downstage transsphincteric fistulas to intersphincteric fistulas allowing multiple treatment options, even when the LIFT itself is unsuccessful. In addition, low rates of incontinence have been reported using subjective measures and validated incontinence scores.
