Abstract
In addition to their primary clinical care activities, anesthesiologists, both in training and in practice, can take advantage of many opportunities to participate in community outreach. This type of outreach may take several forms, including the provision of free care, other interventions designed to increase access to care, activities that help educate the public, and direct charitable giving. Participation in such endeavors may lead to a broader educational experience for trainees and may be even more practical at a time when call and practice responsibilities are more demanding. Because anesthesiologists are not as visible to the public as other physicians, such activities may also be a valuable opportunity to enhance public awareness of the roles that anesthesiologists play in the healthcare system.
