Abstract

Excessive bleeding during the perioperative period increases morbidity and mortality. Thus, significant effort has been focused on a variety of methods for controlling blood loss. In addition to traditional methods, drugs have been developed to interact at specific sites along the coagulation cascade to enhance clotting and reduce bleeding. These drugs are known as hemostatic agents. In certain populations at high risk for bleeding, such as patients undergoing major cardiac and orthopedic procedures, as well as trauma patients and those who refuse blood transfusion, the administration of hemostatic drugs may be indicated.
