Robotic Sleeve Gastrectomy

Abstract

The sleeve gastrectomy has proven to be an excellent procedure for resolution of morbid obesity and its comorbid medical issues. The use of the robot in sleeve gastrectomy has been reported sparingly, but our experience demonstrates that the robotic approach has similar results to its laparoscopic counterpart. Despite the advantages of the robotic platform, until recently, the use of the robot in sleeve gastrectomies has been limited by the lack of a robotic stapler. The recent FDA approval of the robotic stapler, however, will now allow the entire procedure to be completed by the console surgeon. Further experience with larger numbers and randomization is necessary to determine its clear benefit in sleeve gastrectomies.
