Dysrhythmias in a Patient with Crohn’s Disease

Chapter

Abstract

A 48-year-old man with a long-standing history of Crohn’s disease presented for exploratory laparotomy and lysis of adhesions. During surgery, the patient developed frequent premature ventricular contractions, and investigation revealed severe hypomagnesemia and mild hypokalemia. Lessons discussed in this chapter include anesthetic considerations for Crohn’s disease, potassium content of packed red blood cells, electrocardiographic findings of hypokalemia and hypomagnesemia, and treatment of intraoperative premature ventricular contractions.
