Geriatric Trauma and Critical Care

Abstract

The elderly population represents the fastest growing demographic group in the United States. The most common cause of abdominal pain that requires surgical evaluation and treatment in the elderly is symptomatic biliary disease. Early recognition is important due to the delayed patient presentation which is common in the geriatric population resulting in a more advanced disease process compared to young patients. Delays in treatment can often be precarious, leading to poor outcomes and subsequent increased costs. This chapter will review the epidemiology of biliary disease, physiologic changes associated with aging, and the diagnostic workup and management that will lead to optimal clinical care of elderly patients with biliary disease.
