Abstract

The prevalence and severity of overweight in children and adolescent is dramatically increasing worldwide. For example, the overall 2007 prevalence of overweight and obesity in children in the United States ranged from 20 to 35 % among the various states (Fig. 8.1; [1]). The increase in both the prevalence of obesity and its severity in children has also spurred a parallel increase in the prevalence of obesity-associated morbidities, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, systemic hypertension, atherosclerosis, nonalcoholic fatty liver/steatohepatitis, depression, and decreased quality of life, all of which used to be rare pediatric conditions even as recently as a decade ago. These short- and long-term morbid consequences of obesity, and more particularly the clustering of respiratory, metabolic, and cardiovascular risk factors in the context of obesity, further stress the importance of increasing the public awareness to this problem, and prioritization of the overweight child and adolescent as a major public health concern and as an emergency.
