Abstract

As we become more aware of the role of nutrition in chronic diseases, there are increasing questions on how nutrition affects asthma, one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood. Many parents of asthmatic children who are concerned about side effects of chronic medications are motivated to modify their children’s basic food choices, and/or use nutritional supplements if it is safe and has the potential to reduce medications. Food is something parents provide daily to their children and can give without prescription. It can give them a sense of involvement and is part of fostering self-care. Modern medicine has given us effective drugs to control asthma symptoms and while these are essential to the care of patients with asthma, we also need to explore the potential power of foods and its nutritional components. It is especially important to see if there are specific common nutrient deficiencies that can affect asthma, either inherent to the disease or acquired through chronic use of drugs.
