Abstract

Fluid and electrolyte optimization serves an integral role in the management of the surgical patient. Electrolyte disturbances should be addressed promptly and may require medical consultation particularly if there are symptoms. Routine preoperative use of coagulation studies, platelet count may be unnecessary and should be guided by patient history and the surgical bleeding risk that accompanies the proposed procedure. Alcohol abuse may be a co-contributor to nutritional defi ciencies in this patient population.
