Abstract

The first phase of settlement on the promontory was rapidly enclosed by a palisade with uprights set in a continuous stone-packed trench. The route of the palisade is well defined on the east, south, and west, but not on the north. In the northwest, a complex series of five entrance gateways rapidly replaced each other over c. 40 years, and a rampart was constructed but only on the western side of the entrance.
