Abstract

At present, the electron transport through molecule-scale systems is being intensively studied both theoretically and experimentally. Largely, unceasing efforts of the research community to further advance these studies are motivated by important application potentialities of single molecules as active elements of various nanodevices intended to compliment and/or to replace the silicon-based electronics. Elucidation of physics underlying electron transport through molecules is necessary for efficient designing and operating of molecule-based devices. The first measurement of practical molecular transport junctions are less than two decades old. In this short time the methods of preparation and characterization of metal–molecular junctions have demonstrated a very rapid development. The constant improvement of experimental capabilities brings new and better opportunities to measure and study transport properties of MMM junctions and other similar systems.
