Abstract
This annual Fellowship was founded by W. T. Porter in 1921 with proceeds from the Harvard Apparatus Company which he founded. In many other ways, also, Dr. Porter was a generous benefactor of the Society, especially in founding and donating to the Society the American Journal of Physiology. The original stipend of the Porter Fellowship was $1,200 and it was Dr. Porter’s hope that this might be continued indefinitely. This hope was realized, and with the exception of the war years there has been a Porter Fellow every year. A list of all the Porter Fellows is given in table 14. More complete data can be found in The Physiologist (1 (5): 16, 1958). It is obvious that many of these young men and women have subsequently earned enviable reputations in physiological research.
