Abstract

A history of any organization should give an account of the plans and accomplishments of its leaders and the major problems they encountered during their tenure of office. For the American Physiological Society (the Society, APS) and the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (the Federation, FASEB), their leaders for the past forty years have been first of all their executive officers. Milton O. Lee was appointed to this position in both organizations in 1947 and remained in charge of FASEB operations until 1965. Near the middle of his term, in 1956, he relinquished responsibility as executive secretary of APS on the appointment of Ray G. Daggs as executive secretary-treasurer. Lee continued, however, as managing editor of the APS journals until his retirement in 1965. Ray Daggs served the Society until 1972, when he was succeeded by Orr E. Reynolds, a member of APS since 1948.
