Abstract
Identifying and analyzing the ancient and early influences on what would become the discipline known today as exercise physiology are formidable tasks. The range of disciplines involved and the time period of potential influences are both expansive, and the fact that no identifiable field of exercise physiology existed before the mid-nineteenth century is particularly troublesome. Accordingly, questions concerning what to read, where to look, and what years to examine loom large. Whereas the other authors in this volume could focus on a particular organ system, I did not have that luxury.
