Abstract
During the last few months of the war, when Starling was spending most of his time back at UCL, the Lancet asked him to review a book. It was The Report of the Committee on the Position of Natural Science in the Educational System of Great Britain: hardly a riveting title. But it got Starling going—producing an explosion of all his accumulated fury at the government and the educational system. The review begins:
The astounding and disastrous ignorance of the most elementary scientific facts displayed by members of British public as to the efficacy of the education imparted at a high price to members of the upper classes, including those who are chiefly responsible for the control of the destiny of this country. (Starling, 1918)
