  • First Online:
Global Perspectives on Social Capital and Health

Abstract

This chapter explains the important role that social capital plays in disaster impact reduction and resilience following disaster. First, we introduce the conceptual background for disaster research and the potential contribution of social capital in affecting population health outcomes during each disaster phase. In the second section we review empirical studies of disaster and the role of social capital in community recovery and resilience. The concluding section discusses future directions for research on social capital and health in disaster settings.
