Abstract
It would be difficult to find a better vantage point from which to view the development of modern biomedical knowledge than an islet of Langerhans. From ancient clinical descriptions of diabetes mellitus to the cloning of the insulin gene, the story of the islet hormones, with all of its ramifications, includes an astonishingly large segment of biomedical history. In a surprising number of cases, investigators in this field have made conceptual and methodological contributions that have stimulated advances in many other areas of biology. The pioneering quality of many studies on insulin, glucagon, and related problems is, in fact, the thematic glue of the section on the effects of the discovery of insulin and glucagon (see p. 296).
