Abstract

Food-based dietary guidelines (FBDG) are used as key instruments in nutritional policy and nutritional education of the public. For that reason, FBDG should:

  1. 1.

    Reflect the national dietary situation.

  2. 2.

Be practicable (foods included in the FBDG should reflect local dietary habits and must be accessible and affordable).

  3. 3.

Be short and clear to be easily understood and remembered by the general public.

  4. 4.

    Be based on scientific evidence.
