Abstract
Diagnostic catheterization and percutaneous interventions are increasing as the population ages, and atherosclerosis prevails in many vascular territories. Access site complications such as bleeding, hematoma, and retroperitoneal bleed have become the Achilles heel of interventional cardiology. Access closure at the end of the procedure is one of the pivotal steps that determine success of a diagnostic or interventional procedure. Several studies have examined the best techniques to reduce hospital stay and decrease bleeding complications at the access site. With the creation of vascular closure devices (VCD), hemostasis could be achieved within 5-10 minutes. Complications of bleeding were reduced. However, new complications caused by the deployment of VCDs happened. In this chapter, the complications during usage of these VCDs and the strategies how to correct and prevent them will be discussed.
