Abstract
Cervical carcinoma is the second most common cancer in women in developing countries and the seventh most common cancer in the developed countries. Nearly 80 % of cases occur in less developed countries.
The American Cancer Society estimates that 12,170 new cases of invasive cervical carcinoma will be diagnosed in the United States in 2012 and about 4,220 women will die from their disease. Cervical cancer mortality in the United States has declined by almost 70 % between 1955 and 1992 thanks to the introduction and increasing use of screening with a Pap smear.
