Abstract

In recent years, a group of usually benign (but sometimes locally recurrent) tumors composed of cells differentiating toward specialized cells of the genital stromal mesenchyme have been identified, in both females and males. These include fibroepithelial stromal polyp, angiomyofibroblastoma, aggressive angiomyxoma, cellular angiofibroma, and superficial (cervicovaginal) myofibroblastoma. Although these lesions originally were described as separate entities, according to degree of circumscription, relative amounts of myxoid change, and vascularity and collagen fibers, it now is recognized that the tumors in this group may share overlapping morphologic and immunohistochemical features. The latter include variable expression of desmin, smooth muscle actin, and CD34, and usually diffuse nuclear immunoreactivity for estrogen and progesterone receptors.
