Bioactive Polyphenols from Wine Grapes

Abstract

There is a vast amount of data describing the putative beneficial effects of resveratrol on human health. In this chapter we provide a critical overview of the most well-documented health effects that have been attributed to this molecule: Cardiovascular effects, anticancer effects, neuroprotective properties, and its influence on energy homeostasis and obesity. In addition, we also discuss the controversial effects of resveratrol on lifespan. This chapter summarizes the findings of in vitro experiments with cultured cells, the results of in vivo studies arising mostly from work with rodent models, and data collected from the limited number of human trials of resveratrol that have been completed to date. Where possible, we include the experimental evidence describing the health effects of piceid, pterostilbene and viniferins, and highlight the parallels between their effects and those of the parent molecule resveratrol.
