Abstract

Approximately 600,000 hysterectomies are performed each year in the United States. Uterine fibroids are the leading indication for this procedure. Some patients choose a more conservative approach. Approximately 81 % of patients who undergo myomectomy have a resolution of their symptoms, but the risk of regrowth of myomas and possible reoperation must be discussed with the patient. Of the almost 40,000 myomectomies performed each year in the United States, only a small fraction are performed in a minimally invasive fashion. The new robotic platform, the da Vinci surgical system (Intuitive Surgical, Inc.; Sunnyvale, CA), was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in April 2005, allowing the surgeon the advantage of a three-dimensional view of the operative field and the ability to use wristed instruments with 7° of motion, thereby providing a new viable option for patients. This chapter reviews the robotic-assisted laparoscopic myomectomy while providing the most current data.
