Abstract
In this chapter, ‘Training in Narrative-Based Supervision: Conversations Inviting Change,’ John Launer describes the training methods used to teach narrative-based supervision (NBS). All doctors who teach registrars in the UK are required to attend training courses to obtain accreditation or reaccreditation, and training in NBS is a popular option for GP trainers and many other specialties. Launer describes the concept of ‘supervision’ as a reflective and non-judgmental learning process carried out with peers and based on cases and events from actual practice. He also details the evolution of the NBS training system, its structure, the approach to teaching supervision skills in small and large groups, and the results of course evaluations. The first day of a typical 3-day course is described with examples of didactic materials as well as with a representative scenario from a small group teaching session. The chapter is designed to be read following Chap. 7, ‘Narrative-Based Supervision.’
