Abstract
The human presence in space glimmers down at those of us who remain Earth-bound. Satellites are fleeting presences in the sky, but their effects lie all around us. It may seem strange to include a chapter on a human artifact among these 25 observations that have changed history, but few technologies have affected the modern world more than satellites. Be it where we are, who we want to talk to, what the weather will be tomorrow or how our nation’s enemies are (mis)behaving, these orbiting pieces of metal define the boundaries of knowledge. The observation of satellites is straightforward and rewarding. The history of satellites and the science of the International Space Station (ISS) will determine the form and focus of humankind’s future among the stars.
