Abstract

In this chapter we penetrate the deep places of space. Our observations take us to far-off galaxies, including some of those in the Virgo supercluster, one of the richest areas of the night sky. We look at how resolving the strange fact of a dark sky illumined by so many stars leads to a fundamental property of the universe, its expansion. We then try to peer at the darkest thing of all, dark matter.
