Abstract

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a developmental disorder characterized by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Though traditionally thought to be a disorder that children outgrow, ADHD commonly persists into adolescence. Given the pivotal nature of this period of development, the presentation of ADHD in adolescence is unique and involves a number of issues that are not typically considered in childhood. The aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of and synthesize the state of the science on ADHD during adolescence, including developmental trends into adolescence, comorbidity, assessment, treatment, issues related to stimulants and long-term use, emotion dysregulation, and developmental issues into adulthood.

Notes

  1. 1.

One caveat to these findings involves ADHD subtypes. To date, no longitudinal studies have assessed rates of persistence for those meeting criteria for ADHD predominantly inattentive type. See the special issue of Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice (2001); 8(4) for classification issues involving the inattentive subtype.
