Abstract

Successful robotic renal surgery requires a strong foundation in the fundamentals of preoperative evaluation and patient preparation, from the initial patient selection up to the time of incision. Herein we review the preoperative preparation for patients undergoing robotic renal surgery, beginning with the outpatient evaluation and patient selection, counseling, and required medical examination.

Subsequently, we review the preparation of a well-informed operative team, focusing on effective communication to ensure quality patient outcomes. Discussion of positioning will focus on transperitoneal and retroperitoneoscopic robotic surgery, as well as positioning for procedures requiring access to the distal ureter and pelvis. Along with this, we highlight “pitfalls” and potential complications of positioning patients for robotic renal surgery. At the conclusion of this chapter, the reader should understand the fundamentals of preoperative preparation, planning, and patient positioning for robotic renal surgery.
