Treating Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in the Very Young Child

  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Handbook of Treating Variants and Complications in Anxiety Disorders

Abstract

Important developmental differences in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in very young children (ages 4–8) may be observed when compared to older children and adolescents. Although findings are preliminary, the chapter discusses the nature, contributing factors, and treatment of OCD in young children. Treatment modifications and considerations are highlighted by a case study. Further research is needed to establish the etiology and pathogenesis of the disorder as well as efficacious treatments within this population.
