Abstract
Open abdomen or nonclosure of fascia has become a great advance in the management of the critically injured or ill patient. It offers many benefits but has many disadvantages if practiced without attention to detail. Prompt closure of fascia should be the goal of therapy to prevent serious complications. This chapter outlines the management principles of open abdomen and the surgical techniques of achieving abdominal closure.
