Abstract
Networks exist in a vast variety of real world systems. They have played an important role in the social and technological growth of our society. Some prominent examples of networked systems are urban and transportation systems, military systems, political/social networks, production and consumer markets, supply-chains, energy markets, internet, web data centers, electronic commerce systems, sensor networks and telecommunication systems. Because of the diversity of network applications, networks are studied in a wide range of professional and academic domains including engineering, business management and social science.

An alternative term for networks that captures the above characteristics is multi-agent systems. In many applications such as electronic commerce, artificial intelligence and social networks, the use of the term multi-agent system is more common.
