Abstract
The Pacific coast area of eastern Japan was struck by the Great East Japan Earthquake (Tohoku District—off the Pacific Ocean Earthquake), which occurred at 14:46 on 11 March 2011. This earthquake occurred in an area where the Pacific plate sinks beneath the North American plate, and the magnitude of this earthquake was 9.0, the largest in Japan’s recorded history. The seismic source was at latitude 38.1 north, longitude 142.9 east, and at a depth of 23.7 km (Fig. 2.1).
