  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Long Island Sound

Abstract

Long Island Sound and the contiguous upland areas on both sides of the waterway have a long and diverse history. Emphasizing the socioeconomic development of the Sound area from the time of Captain Adrian Block’s exploration in the early seventeenth century to the early twenty-first century, this chapter explores the Sound as a nautical highway for sailing vessels connecting the region with Boston, New York, the West Indies and Europe, the era of steam navigation and its relationship to tourism, land-use patterns beginning with Native Peoples, commercial and recreational fishing, twentieth century suburbanization, the quest for solutions to the region’s growing demand for energy, and contemporary environmental challenges.
