Let F be a geometric global field of characteristic p > 0, \(\mathbb{A}\) its ring of adèles, \(G = GL(r)\) and π an irreducible admissible representation of \(G(\mathbb{A})\), namely a \(G(\mathbb{A})\)-module, over \(\mathbb{C}\). Then π is the restricted direct product \({\otimes }_{v}{\pi }_{v}\) over all places v of F of irreducible admissible G v = G(F v )-modules π v . For almost all v the component π v is unramified. In this case there are nonzero complex numbers \({z}_{1,v},\ldots ,{z}_{r,v}\), uniquely determined up to order by π v and called the Hecke eigenvalues of π v , with the following property: π v is the unique irreducible unramified subquotient π((z i, v )) of the G v -module \(I({\mathbf{z}}_{v}) = Ind({\delta }^{1/2}{\mathbf{z}}_{v};{B}_{v},{G}_{v})\) which is normalizedly induced from the unramified character \({\mathbf{z}}_{v} : ({b}_{ij})\mapsto {\prod\nolimits }_{i}{z}_{iv}^{{deg}_{v}({b}_{ii})}\) of the upper triangular subgroup B v of G v .
