As we have seen, by the end of the 1980s, even before the fall of the Berlin Wall had triggered the impetus that would lead to the collapse of the Soviet bloc, the USSR’s military industrial complex had attempted to open up to Western markets to obtain the currencies essential to its survival. Space launchers, as quasi-legendary showcases of know-how for over three decades, were the clear choice, offering the prospect of capturing a share of a satellite launch market that was in full expansion at that time.
